Mechanical Design Engineer II - New Glenn Launch Vehicle Umbilical

Blue Origin
life insurance, parental leave, paid time off, paid holidays, 401(k)
United States, Washington, Seattle
Nov 19, 2024

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As the Mechanical Engineer you will be part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers to lead the design of a fluid system on a re-useable launch vehicle. You will engage in all levels of the design cycle of mechanical and fluid system components including conceptual design, requirements, system modeling, layouts, structural analysis, modeling and drafting, manufacturing and integration support, test definition and mission support.

To accomplish this, you will be responsible to build engineering documentation including schematics, clear requirements, design reviews, bill of materials, and other necessary deliverables. You will use 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs (ANSYS Preferred) to craft and analyze the system. You will use creative thinking and novel manufacturing solutions to tackle sophisticated problems with high pressure, cryogenic, and highly stressed hardware. You will deliver completed designs using the best draft practicing per ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards along with clear and well detailed analysis reports. Following the design efforts, you will lead and participate in component and system level testing and data analysis. To be successful in this role good project management skills are vital including vendor management, scheduling, and basic budget tracking.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent

  • 2+ years of experience designing aerospace or equivalent type mechanical system elements within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles using metallic and/or composite materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods.

  • Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)

  • Experience in the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyzed pressurized systems (ANSYS preferred)

  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5)

  • Working knowledge of component design such as valves, actuators, mechanisms, tubes, latches and pressurized components, aerospace hardware

  • Working knowledge of fabrication, integration processes, and quality control techniques relative to tubes, machined components, and welded hardware

  • Experience with stack-ups, linear and radial and types of fits

  • Experience with static and dynamic seals and spring seal design

  • Experience with hydraulic fluid systems and component design

  • Experience with pneumatic fluids systems and component design

  • Working knowledge of aerospace materials and treatments

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

  • Up to 10% travel may be required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of proven experience in the design of fluid systems and/or mechanisms

  • Experience as responsible engineer guiding a small team of design engineers

  • Experience with launch vehicle or ground cryogenic and pressure system

  • Supplier management standard methodologies involving sourcing components

  • Experience testing pressurized systems including water, pneumatics, hydraulics, and cryogenic propellants
