The Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for tenure-track faculty at the assistant or associate rank.

We are looking for a scholar whose research:

  • Is rigorous, innovative and impactful;
  • Focuses on one of these areas (or an intersection): affordable housing, real estate development, climate change and adaptation. Other areas to be considered will be natural hazards, housing and community development, economic development, workforce development, development finance, spatial analysis, and sustainable and resilient communities; and
  • Seeks to inform and influence urban/rural policy to expand access to opportunity for everyone.


We are looking for a teacher who:

  • Is engaging and committed to student success;
  • Will develop new courses, or modify existing courses to best leverage their talents and knowledge to enrich our curriculum;
  • Brings their research into the classroom, and vice-versa;
  • Wants to mentor and collaborate with students; and
  • Will teach a standard load (2 courses per semester).

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of City and Regional Planning is an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department engages in teaching, primarily at the graduate level; conducts applied research on urban and regional issues; and serves the state, nation, and planning profession. The department offers a Masters in City and Regional Planning, a PhD, and an undergraduate minor. In any given year there are about 85 Masters students enrolled, 35 doctoral students and a growing cadre of undergraduates and students enrolled in dual degree programs. The faculty consists of 18 core faculty consisting of tenure-track faculty members and full-time teaching faculty along with part-time practitioners and researchers all of whom are active in the teaching and research programs of the department. The faculty usually generates over $3.0 million annually through research and training grants.
Position Summary
This position is a full time, 9-month, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor located in the Department of City and Regional Planning within the College of Arts and Sciences. This position is expected to spend approximately 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. The scholar in this position will conduct rigorous research using appropriate methodologies including a variety of quantitative and/or qualitative methods. This position carries a 2 course per semester teaching load in spring and fall. Courses will be determined based on the selected candidate's expertise and departmental needs. This position is expected to teach and mentor at all levels. The scholar in this position will show a desire to train and work with a diverse body of students. This position will conduct service that includes, but is not limited to search committees, review committees and administrative roles within the department and/or College.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Planning or related fields by the start date of the appointment.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The successful candidate will be expected to develop or extend a record of scholarly contribution as well as contribute to teaching and service at all levels.
