Job Summary

Applies advanced technical project management skills as a seasoned, experienced technical project management professional with a full understanding of project management frameworks and methods, relevant policies, and procedures to resolve highly complex issues. Determines methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Manages projects of broad and diverse scope, size, impact, budget and/or project team size, with considerable impact on the organization.

This position will be heavily involved in the execution of projects implemented in support of our research community, following institutional policies and practices.

Works with different levels of stakeholders in research areas including departmental IT resources which support diverse areas of research. Across research areas, work with stakeholders to support and understand how to effectively direct the team to implement the approved projects, solutions, tools, and operational process improvements. Implementation will include new infrastructure solutions and research tools which will require close partnership with internal and external research communities as well as Central IT teams responsible for supporting existing solutions. Incumbent will also lead projects repatriating applications from the cloud to a centralized data center. Understanding and reporting concerns during the deployment of these efforts will be key to ensuring a successful implementation.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $213,200 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

UCSF IT is technologically and organizationally complex, with both centralized and departmental IT units providing support for enterprise and specialized services. UCSF IT provides infrastructure, network, security, analytics, integration, and application support services, essential to the organization's ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store, and share sensitive information. The IT Project Management Office supports collaboration and value delivery though the definition of standards supportive of delivering projects at scale. The IT Project Management Office orchestrates project execution, ensuring strategic alignment, optimal resource allocation, and value creation.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or 8+ equivalent experience/training.
  • 8+ years of experience using project management tools, to effectively plan and track projects, including adapting their use as appropriate for each project's unique needs.
  • 8+ years of experience leading projects that require cross-functional collaboration
  • 8+ years of experience working with outside vendors (e.g., hardware, software tools, certification consultants, cloud providers) and holding them accountable to SOWs.
  • Experience working with cloud-based applications (AWS, Azure).
  • 6+ years' experience in data center migration (cloud, data center)
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate critical information across disciplines. Understands how projects relate to other business strategies and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate agreement amongst team members with disparate personalities and viewpoints.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects
  • Experience working with all facets of an academic research community for project implementation
  • Requires extensive knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Working knowledge of technology-related initiatives and an understanding of the impact on the organization of such initiatives.
  • Demonstrated capacity to anticipate obstacles and plan for contingencies.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated effective writing skills.
  • Demonstrated competency in selecting and implementing project management methods and techniques.
  • Proven leadership ability. Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced skills for tracking effort and project progress. Demonstrated highly advanced organization and project management skills. Demonstrated strong conceptual and planning skills to analyze projects of broad and diverse scope. Understand the cost impact of projects, project tracking tools, and metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with all levels of an organization.
  • Experience leading a team of technology professionals.
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of computing and communications, including hardware infrastructure, cloud, applications, networking, software, operations, and disaster recovery.
