The Department of Biochemistry

Job Description

Biochemistry is dual funded by the School of Medicine (SOM) and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CAFNR). There are 10.2 FTE SOM faculty, headcount of 13, including some joint appointments in Otolaryngology, Radiology, Chemistry and 19.5 FTE CAFNR faculty, headcount of 22, joint appointments in Education and Physics. The Biochemistry Business Manager is responsible for managing business operations, budgets, payroll and ensuring scal and human resource compliance.

Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Management of two discrete nancial portfolios (operating, gift, and grant accounts) housed in two separate schools totaling with large inter-year variations, with latest shared credit of $7.4M.
- Prepare budget for the Division to include aligning revenue and objectives of the Division and College, projecting expenses and identifying areas for cost reduction/savings. Implementation and verication of the annual budget process for SOM (1.7M) and CAFNR (3.7M).

- Reporting on the nancial position of funds in each school (CAFNR, SOM) and the department.

- Financial management and administration of the graduate program (personnel actions, tuition waivers, stipends, fellowships and health insurance).

- Reviewing and approving departmental nancial transactions (expense reports,
requisitions, and payment requests.

- Development and implementation of operational policies in compliance with SOM, CAFNR and university policies and procedures that expand operational efficiencies and capabilities.

- Collect, analyze, and communicate data to the Chair, faculty and staff to assist in decision making for the Department. Responding to requests for information from SOM, CAFNR leadership and System.

- Serving as a member of the departmental leadership team by providing advice on, and assistance with achieving strategic objectives.

- Liaising with administrative staff across campus (OSPA, Office of Research, Bond Life Science, Next Gen and Dalton Centers) to support Biochemistry research faculty housed in research centers.

- Providing education on scal policies and procedures to faculty, students and staff
regarding campus, and college-level policy and procedure.

- Reviewing and approving all personnel actions for budget impact, appropriate authorization, and compliance with all applicable policy and procedure.

- Supervision of 5 full time direct reports including onboarding/training, handling sensitive personnel issues, conveying performance expectations and completing annual evaluations.

- Collaborating with CAFNR and SOM HR staff on the recruitment of faculty, research staff, visiting scholars, graduate and undergraduate students.

Shift

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Hiring Range: $58,573 - $92,710
