The Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences (https://geoearth.charlotte.edu/) is a diverse community of physical, geospatial, and social scientists composed of over 35 faculty members, 400 undergraduate majors, and 60 graduate students. Our current mission is to inspire discovery of the Earth and its inhabitants and to foster informed communities of learners who strive for a sustainable world. We create and disseminate knowledge of the Earth's human and natural systems to adapt to an ever-changing environment in which we live, work, and interact. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Meteorology (BS), Earth and Environmental Sciences (BS), Geology (BS), Geography (BA/BS), and Environmental Studies (BA). At the graduate level, we offer an MS in Earth Sciences, an MA and PhD in Geography, and regularly participate in the interdisciplinary Infrastructure and Environmental Systems ( INES) and Public Policy ( PPOL) PhD programs and the Master's in Urban Design ( MUD). The Department is also home to the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science ( CAGIS, https://gis.charlotte.edu/) and the Charlotte Action Research Project ( CHARP, https://charp.charlotte.edu/). We are committed to excellence in disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching.

UNC Charlotte created the Carolinas' first School of Data Science (https://sds.charlotte.edu/) in 2020, tapping into the region's expansive ecosystem of research, industry, and community engagement to apply a visionary lens to the education and application of AI and data science. The School of Data Science is uniquely centered in the hub of big data and currently offers a BS degree in Data Science and two MS degrees in Data Science & Business Analytics and Health Informatics & Analytics, and a Ph.D. in Data Science. Currently, the school has more than 80 full-time, joint, and affiliate faculty and a total enrollment of approximately 850 undergraduate and graduate students.

Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of their academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Sustainable Cities (broadly understood). This is a joint appointment between the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences (75%) and UNC Charlotte's School of Data Science (25%). We seek a dynamic and broadly trained urban geographer who can theorize about the spatial dimensions of critical sustainability issues facing cities today, including but not limited to urban inequalities, housing affordability, transportation accessibility, clean energy/energy efficiency, and/or sustainable urbanization and land use. The successful candidate will have the ability to use mixed methods, i.e., qualitative and quantitative, including data science techniques, to address their research questions. This position will begin on August 11, 2025
Minimum Experience/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. degree in Geography awarded by the date of appointment. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their ability (1) to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geography, data science, and their area of specialization; and (2) to build a cutting-edge, externally funded research program in the area of sustainable cities that is theoretically grounded and utilizing mixed methods including data science techniques. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, helping to remove barriers to ensure the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.
