Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $77,900 - $143,300. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $97,000 - $117,000.

Job Closing Date

This position is expected to work mostly on-campus although there may be occastional remote work days.

This is a renewable 3-year contract appointment eligible for full University of California benefits.

About the Job

The Director of Student Affairs leads the curricular advising program and student support operations. Through the work of the team they supervise, the Director is responsible for social programming, academic activities, academic remediation and support programs, career advising, and supporting students in the medical school application process. The Director collaborates with faculty and DOME leadership to integrate student services and the curriculum.

The Director develops, prioritizes, and implements strategies that improve program and curricular quality, processes, and compliance by providing vision, leadership, strategic direction, and evaluation of various services offered in support of students enhancing their capacities to be active, engaged, and successful learners. The Director develops the long-term organizational goals of the unit and manages student affairs for UC Merced's Department of Medical Education (DOME) and SJV PRIME+, a Baccalaureate/MD program in partnership with UCSF and its regional campus at UCSF Fresno.

The Director develops and manages programs and events - throughout the curriculum, including major milestone events - designated to enhance the student experience and professional advancement of pre-health, pre-medical, and first-year BS/MD medical students to ensure each student is supported, empowered, and progresses professionally in their journey to becoming a healthcare professional. This includes:

  • Developing and implementing plans for new/existing programs and student service experiences.
  • Developing academic assistance initiatives and counseling and support services.
  • Formulating policies and procedures in support of student experience services.
  • Planning and implementing events to support student success and key transitions.
  • Providing administrative leadership for key student experience committees and initiatives.
  • Supervising staff responsible for different aspects of student experiences.
  • Collaborating with other campus, departmental, and SJV PRIME+ program members as needed.
  • Assessing resources and student support activities regularly to evaluate and improve the delivery of services.

The ideal candidate works collaboratively with UCM, DOME, and SJV PRIME+ leadership regarding mission, vision, and goals to cultivate and sustain the best possible student experience now and in the future.

Key Responsibilities:

Works with the Department of Medical Education (DOME) leadership to plan and manage the student affairs function for pre-health, pre-med, and SJV PRIME+ BS/MD students. Develops and executes strategic plans for program operations and activities, ensuring ongoing sustainability of academic and student support services. Serves as a subject matter expert on student support to staff and faculty who advise learners with academic and personal challenges.

  • Collaborates with UCM, DOME, and SJV PRIME+ leadership to develop and implement short and long-term strategic plans to provide visionary leadership and direction for the student affairs team.
  • Develops, implements, and promotes programs that foster student leadership and professionalism; develops a calendar of student-related activities and events; promotes student participation in social, cultural, and recreational activities.
  • Creates systems to organize and coordinate key transitions on the continuum for pre-health, pre-medical, and SJV PRIME+ BS/MD students. Collaborates with UCSF and UCSF Fresno counterparts in support of SJV PRIME+ student affairs services.
  • Represents the DOME student affairs unit to the UCM community and relevant external constituencies.
  • Coordinates with staff, faculty, curricular partners, campus services, and community support services as needed to create a seamless experience for students and ensure workflow processes are defined, and timelines are met.
  • Provides academic advice to SJV PRIME+ students on academic progression and requirements. Manage curricular remediation and support programs to assist students with challenging academic and personal needs, overseeing faculty and staff who advise and support students in the program. Serves on SJV PRIME+ School of Medicine Readiness Committee (SRC).
  • Directly and through the work of staff, supervises and counsels learners with challenging academic and personal needs, providing guidance on academic remediation, curricular advising, and coordination with campus and community support services.
  • Monitors program communications and websites and collaborates with program leadership to develop and maintain a program marketing strategy. Ensures information is current in all electronic and written materials.

Provides leadership to student affairs team and maintains strong ties with all levels of curricular program staff, faculty, department and program administration, as well as University stakeholders to foster student-centered support services. Coordinates periodic program evaluations to ensure the experiences being offered consistently meet established service and educational objectives.

  • Manages the portfolio of projects and work of their staff providing social programming, curricular activities, and student affairs / academic support. Ensure the team has the resources and support needed to do their work. Supports staff professional development through coaching and mentorship.
  • Recommends changes in staffing and budget to ensure the efficient operation of the program. Recruits, hires, boards, and trains staff as needed. Evaluates staff performance and defines development goals.
  • Assists with administration and management of resources, approving program-related charges, and communicating significant changes as they occur to program management.
  • Ensures measures for continual review and assessment of programs to adapt to changing student, program, and University needs as warranted. Partners with DOME student and academic support faculty directors to develop and organize program curriculum, ensuring current programmatic and learner needs are met by assessing evaluation data trends.
  • Monitors social and educational activities and student services to support learners and ensure the program meets accreditation standards and reports to national accrediting bodies, as needed. Uses data and analytics to identify, analyze, and resolve problems, which may be operational or educational in nature.
  • Assesses learner/program evaluation data trends, compiles and presents data to program leadership, and actively leads and participates in continuous improvement efforts for support programs and medical education curriculum.
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of the field of student affairs and student services. Stays up to date on relevant changes in university and industry guidelines by attending training seminars, monitoring University and sponsoring agencies' websites, and keeping unit personnel updated on all relevant changes.
  • Provides input and leadership for policy and program development by serving UCM, UCSF, and/or SJV PRIME+ committees or by providing advice/data to support these efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related area, or equivalent experience/training; and/or
  • Advanced degree from an accredited university in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field (preferred); and
  • Five years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in a student services job function, or a combination of education/training/experience (required)
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Exceptional organizational and strategic coordination skills, with the ability to plan, structure, critically analyze, and operationalize.
  • The ability to be proactive in preparing for current issues and trends; and the ability to effectively monitor and respond to emergent trends when necessary.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes, or services to make improvements.
  • Skills in project management and social perceptiveness.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, and leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills, as well as profound relationship-building and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in the complex ambiguity of an undergraduate medical education (UME) system.
