General Description: Performs laboratory bench work related to a wide variety of routine and specialized clinical and/or analytic laboratory tests with minimal supervision. May assist in components of the laboratory management program. At this level incumbents may train, assist, evaluate and/or review the work/performance of level I, II and III employees and other laboratory personnel as assigned.

  • Oversees the testing activities in one or more laboratory section.
  • Ensures compliance with technical policies and procedures.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the hospital in meeting regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Acts as preceptor for laboratory personnel and assists in the training of students and Pathology residents.
  • Mentor other staff with laboratory quality activities including quality monitoring and auditing, occurrence/deviation documentation and preparing performance improvement plans.
  • Records information in the OUH lab informatics system relative to patient demographics, specimen/sample collection, identification, preservation, processing, quality control, test results and specimen referral.
  • Evaluate and document performance of individuals responsible for testing by direct observation of specimen/sample handling and test performance.
  • Performs and evaluates quality control procedures following authorized laboratory policies.
  • Reviews QC and initiates troubleshooting of QC.
  • Principal resource for analyzer maintenance and repair.
  • Responsible for advanced troubleshooting and technical problem solving for area of responsibility.
  • Acts as a writer for laboratory technical procedures.
  • Prepare monthly QC for section director review.
  • Create staff schedule. Function as supervisor in supervisor absence.
  • Compile data for monthly section reports.
  • Develop employee training plans in conjunction with supervisor and/or manager.
  • Assists in development and review of IQCPs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate Degree of Medical Lab Technology (MLT), OR
  • Bachelor's Degree which includes: 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six (6) semester hours of chemistry, six (6) semester hours of biology, and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination required.

Experience: 5 or more years of experience in a clinical or other laboratory setting required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Nationally recognized certification through one of the following governing accreditations:ASCP, AMT, AABB, NASKL, ASCLS, HHS, ASHI, AAB, ABB, AMS, CRP, EBPH, Military or NILA.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have the advanced skills to perform required laboratory testing.
  • Must be able to lead a team and provide feedback and instructions to testing personnel.
  • Must be able to consistently and dependably report to work as scheduled.
  • Must be able to maintain legible, accurate and organized records.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information and exercise sound judgment.
  • Must be able to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Must possess ability to understand various operations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work and communicate with co-workers and other caregivers, and meet their needs in a professional, polite, courteous, compassionate, and cooperative manner.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards establishing priorities and completing assignments.
  • Ability to work independently toward a goal while mentoring/directing others.
