Job Summary

Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis. Provide nursing care to either emergency room or intensive care unit patients using established protocols set up by small animal emergency and critical care faculty. Employees are expected to be able to work independently under these guidelines in a teaching environment including providing quasi-instruction to veterinary students. Facility maintenance for the unit and temporary support to other VMTH departments at times may be required.

This position may be eligible for a hiring bonus.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must obtain a VACSP within 3 months of date of hire.
  • No educational requirement.
  • Experience independently providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergency, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
  • Experience working in a small animal clinic as a veterinary technician or as a veterinary assistant.
  • Experience giving medications.
  • Experience using patient monitoring equipment.
  • Experience drawing blood samples.
  • Interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, students, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Experience in the placement of a multi-lumen catheters in either a peripheral or central vein and utilize proper technique(s) to secure and maintain the catheter.
  • Experience training and directing.

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Work Environment

  • Work occasional overtime, work weekends, evenings, holidays and variable hours. In emergency or illness situations, may work alternate shift. Use a respirator during decontamination cleanings. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthetics, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients. Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers. Work with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients. Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.
