Pay Grade/Pay Range: Minimum: $18.32 - Midpoint: $21.97 (Hourly N4)

Department/Organization: 502304 - Accounts Payable

Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm

Job Summary: The Accounting Assistant II maintains accurate financial records. Provides accounting and bookkeeping support. Assists University staff in understanding industry standards, current laws, and university policy as it relates to the financial affairs of the University. Provides guidance and trains entry-level Accounting Assistants.

Additional Department Summary: The Accounting Assistant performs a full range of complex accounting functions requiring an extensive knowledge of University travel, spending, purchasing and procurement, tax, contract and grant, student payment policies and procedures, IRS rules and regulations and state law. Audits for compliance with University policies and procedures, state of Alabama law, and adherence to IRS rules and regulations regarding 1099 and taxable fringe benefit reporting. Uses sound judgement involving all expenditure of University funds. Approves or denies expenditure of appropriate funds depending on whether or not correct criterion is met. Assists all levels of University personnel ranging from executive level management to clerical staff in the understanding of state and federal rules and regulations and University policies and procedures. Communicates with customers using phone, email, Zoom, Teams, and/or other web-based screen sharing tools. Ensures that payments are made according to appropriate accounting standards and audit requirements.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of accounting or bookkeeping experience; OR associate's degree or higher.

Skills and Knowledge: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge of basic accounting skills and the ability to organize work and time in efficient manner. Proficient computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet applications, personal computing networks, and internet software. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to work effectively under stress and high levels of activity. Ability to make decisions based on careful analysis and thoughtful judgements.

Preferred Qualifications: Working knowledge of 1099 rules and regulations. Accounts Payable experience. Degree in business or accounting related field.
