Position Summary
Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing. Probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision. 1.0 FTE. The Department of Art is seeking an artist whose practice is rooted in the expanded field of painting and drawing. The ideal candidate has a practice that broadens and complements those of the current Painting and Drawing faculty, contributing distinct approaches and concerns. Our priority is for a colleague who expands critical perspectives and conceptual territory and is fluent in contemporary cultural and aesthetic discourses. The new faculty member will teach all levels of painting and drawing studio and seminar courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advise MFA students, serve on graduate committees, as well as contribute to the interdisciplinary curriculum in the department at large. Rich resources at the University include the University of New Mexico Art Museum's extensive collection and the Frederick Hammersley Annual Visiting Artist in Painting and Drawing program that invites renowned artists to produce work on campus each Spring semester and work in dialogue with our students. The University of New Mexico's Department of Art is part of the College of Fine Arts, whose internationally recognized programs, faculty, and staff provide a comprehensive education in both the visual and the performing arts. The Department of Art offers the B.A., B.F.A., M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- M.F.A. in studio art with emphasis in Painting and
Drawing or a related field. - Two years of post-graduate university-level teaching
experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Recent creative
work in painting and drawing and its expanded fields. - Demonstrated interest in contributing
to a contemporary interdisciplinary setting in an atmosphere of close faculty-student mentoring. - An active and accelerating record of
professional engagement, which might include exhibitions, recognitions, and reviews in the field. - A creative practice that expands the department's
critical perspectives and conceptual territory. - Conversant in contemporary
issues of material studies, theory, and aesthetics, especially as they relate to painting and drawing. - A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
