Position Summary
The University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Spanish, which is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position. The position begins August 2025. Located about 30 miles south of Albuquerque in rural Valencia County, the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus is a two-year branch community college associated with the University of New Mexico. With an emphasis on teaching excellence, Valencia Campus offers vocational and technical courses as well as academic transfer courses to the citizens of Valencia and northern Socorro counties. The faculty and staff serve a student body of approximately 2,300 each semester. Summary of duties and responsibilities: Provide 12 credit hours of classroom instruction per semester primarily in first-year Spanish. Course load may also include 100 and 200-level Spanish courses, such as Heritage Spanish. Other responsibilities include maintaining student records, posting and maintaining office hours as well as participating in curriculum development, outcomes assessment, college committees, professional development, departmental projects, and college/community service.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Spanish or a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish
- At least one year of experience teaching Spanish language classes at the college level.
- Documented success in language instruction
Preferred Qualifications:
- Terminal degree (PhD) or ABD (all but dissertation) in Spanish or a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish
- Minimum of two years successful experience teaching Spanish language classes at the college level
- One year of successful experience teaching Spanish at a two-year campus or community college
- Demonstrated knowledge of current teaching methodologies, second language acquisition pedagogies (including for New Mexican Heritage speakers of Spanish), curriculum development, and/or assessment
- Demonstrated professional development, such as attending or presenting at workshops or conferences, or scholarly work (related to pedagogy or discipline
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, accessibility, inclusion, linguistic diversity, and diverse student populations, including first-generation college students, low-socioeconomic students, and racially minoritized students
