Job Summary

Responsible for using mathematical techniques and observations to analyze and interpret biological data. Typically works in biomedical field to examine the effects of environmental conditions and treatments on living things.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Observe effects if treatment, side affects, and other facts on living things.
  • Develop clinical trials to assess drug treatments.
  • Analyze genetic data and disease occurrence.
  • Review data of populations exposed to environmental chemicals and conditions.
  • Analyze impact of oil spills on environment.
  • Create complex charts and graphs.
  • Design surveys or experiments or opinion polls to collect data.
  • Report conclusions.
  • Determine most appropriate methods to find and collect data.
  • Use sampling to collect data from some people in a particular group.
  • Write instructions for workers who collect and tabulate the data.
  • Mail surveys.
  • Calculate averages, reliability, and other specifics of the data.
  • Choose and conduct tests to find out the data’s reliability and validity.
  • Explain the limitations of the data to prevent inaccurate conclusions from being drawn.
  • Identify trends.
  • Use computers with specialized statistical software to analyze data
  • Create new statistical software packages to analyze data more accurately and efficiently.
  • Present reports to team members.
  • Make changes to improve design of future surveys and reports.
  • Work in pharmaceutical companies, public health, and medicine.
  • Work for hospitals and public health agencies, where they help identify the sources of outbreaks of illnesses in humans and animals.
